DETROIT (WXYZ) - What can a few hundred metro Detroiters learn from a physicist, a comedienne, a 9-year-old lemonade vendor and the founder of Baby Einstein? That’s exactly what’s been going on today during TEDxDetroit.

The third annual conference convened all day Wednesday at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, bringing together local leaders, entrepreneurs, musicians, technologists, artists and others.

2012 promises to be the biggest year yet for the IGNITE Youth Business Plan Competition.  In addition to bigger prizes, the IGNITE team is looking to expand the competition into more schools, engage more teachers and students, and facilitate more youth business startups than ever before.  Once again, we’ll be coordinating the competition with National Entrepreneurship Week in February.  It’s never too early, however, to get those creative juices flowing! Lemonade Day Detroit announced the results of the first-time program and handed out awards to recognize hundreds of children across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties who started, owned and operated their own lemonade stands June 12.

A Northbrook family’s summer cottage in Michigan did more than provide Ryan Hultman with a place to relax this summer. The 15-year-old credits the retreat with inspiring him to start a second business.

“My dad’s been going up there his whole life and my grandpa has been going up there since he was a little boy,” Hultman said of the Michigan getaway.
